Insulin resistance is now considered a major factor in nearly every chronic illness that is a leading cause of death in the US.

Anyone that has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, immune deficiency, thyroid trouble, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and even those having trouble losing weight, needs to consider insulin resistance as a possible source for their ailments. Many of these conditions are intertwined and have insulin resistance as their cause.

One thing that should be made clear is that insulin resistance is oftentimes reversible if proper guidelines are followed. The key is in understanding what causes insulin resistance and why the body ultimately begins to have trouble regulating blood sugar.

Blood Sugar and Insulin Resistance

It is a common misconception that the purpose of insulin is to lower blood sugar. It is not.

Insulin’s job is to store excess nutrients that the body cannot use for energy.

When you eat, if there is an excess of nutrients, your blood sugar will rise and insulin gets released to store what the body cannot use. Once the storehouses are full, and that’s not difficult to do, the body packs the rest away as saturated fat (not good).

It is important to understand here that blood sugar levels are not the issue. This process is completely natural.

The problem occurs when insulin levels continue to rise as a result of the increasing blood sugar.

The medical world has this backwards. They have taught us that blood sugar levels get too high because the body doesn’t produce enough insulin. This is false (at first).

Type 2 diabetes, as well as many other chronic and life-threatening diseases, stem from insulin resistance which is caused by high levels of insulin in the blood.

The Cause of Insulin Resistance

If you do any research on the cause of insulin resistance, you’re bound to feel a bit discouraged. They make it sound like your body is simply falling apart, malfunctioning for an unknown reason, and there is little you can do about it.

The medical world describes insulin resistance as a condition in which your body either does not use insulin correctly, or that your cells just begin to “ignore” insulin one day. This explanation comes from a common premise in the medical world, mainly that your body is weak, genetically prone to error, and slowly falls apart as you age.

This is absolutely false! Get that notion out of your head immediately!

Our genes have been programmed for health and wellness, not disease. Proper function is innate to all of us. It is only when we live in opposition to how our body works that things get out of balance.

There is a definite cause for insulin resistance. It does not “just happen” randomly. There is an intelligent purpose for cells becoming resistant to insulin, and once you understand the reason your body makes this change, you’ll understand how it can be reversed.

Why Cells Become Insulin Resistant

If you believe that your body is weak and prone to error, there is no recourse for you when it comes to disease. You just have to take your medications, have your surgeries, and hope to live as long as you can with as little suffering as possible.

Not a pretty picture, is it?

But if you want to be healthy, you have to come to the understanding that the body is not weak, that it makes changes for a purpose, and that there is a definite reason for insulin resistance.

The fact is that high amounts of insulin are toxic to the cells of your body, and any time your cells are faced with a toxin, they protect themselves. Insulin resistance is a result of this natural act of defense.

Unfortunately, in doing this, it sets up a chain reaction that is ultimately bad for your longevity.

Cell Receptors and Insulin Resistance

Your cells have little “feelers” called receptors that stick out all over them like the antennae on an insect. These receptors allow the cells to know what is happening around them and to bring in some nutrients. But like I said, high amounts of insulin are toxic, so the cells begin to “down regulate” or shut off their receptors in order to protect themselves when insulin levels are high.

When this happens, the cells become “resistant” to insulin. It is an attempt to save themselves from getting sick. The problem, however, is that when insulin resistance is present, the body needs more insulin in order to deal effectively with blood sugar, so the pancreas has to release more insulin. As insulin levels rise, more insulin resistance is the result.

Eventually, as insulin levels get higher and higher, and insulin resistance becomes more widespread in liver, muscle, and fat cells, the pancreas eventually can’t keep up and it appears as though the body is not producing enough insulin. This is when insulin is prescribed to help. Unfortunately, more insulin is not the answer. It will only contribute to the problem.

Reversing Insulin Resistance

The answer to reversing insulin resistance and preventing disease then, is to keep insulin levels low. This is achieved through following our genetic blueprint so the body is able to express health instead of sickness. When we provide what the body genetically needs, and keep things away that are toxic, it can do this effectively and naturally.

Health is our natural state. Live naturally, as much as you can, and watch your life transform.

Heart disease kills far more people than any other illness, more than all forms of cancer combined.

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest scientific findings – the promising new drug, the life saving surgery, the breakthrough insights into the complex relationship between cholesterol and heart disease – but if you’re willing to dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that ancient yogic teachings on diet and lifestyle reflect a practical wisdom that modern medicine is gradually validating.

The holistic approach to heart disease doesn’t reject the tools like drugs or surgery when necessary. But if you take the holistic approach you are less likely to need them. Here are a few simple things you can do to keep your heart healthy and strong for years to come.

What To Eat

Eat clean! What is a clean diet you ask? Clean eating is staying close to the basics: a wide variety of vegetables, fish, organic meats, cage free eggs, fruits, beans, avocados, nuts, lots and lots of water, and herbal teas. Eating clean will positively affect your overall health.

Yoga

Chronic emotional stress makes plaque build up twice as fast in the coronary arteries that feed the heart. Yoga is perhaps the most effective stress reduction method ever invented. If you’re looking for stress reducing techniques try the following:

Do yogic relaxation techniques, such as breathing, for at least 5 minutes everyday. Research suggests it can increase your resiliency to stress.

Balance your emotions with a regular yoga practice. Studies suggest that yoga helps diffuse emotions such as anger, hostility, and impatience that are linked to heart attacks.

Yoga helps people who suffer from insomnia.

Combat loneliness, another risk factor for heart disease, by becoming part of a community (a yoga group/class). Studies suggest that people with spiritual practices who meet regularly in a group live longer and have fewer heart attacks.

Offer service to those in less fortunate circumstances than yourself – whether that means volunteering in a food pantry, or volunteering your services elsewhere. According to yogic tradition, there is no better way to open your heart.

Take notice of your overall body and mind feeling after a few weeks of yoga. Do your pants feel a little looser? Do you feel happier? Are you eating healthier? D0 you sleep better? Take notice of the little things and keep track in a journal of those small but yet very meaningful changes in your body and your mind.

Heart Smart Workout

There is evidence that less-intense exercise provides major benefits.

Don’t over exercise. Recent studies suggest that extreme exercise, like running 10 miles (if that is not your norm) may cause inflammation.

Practicing yoga asanas for 20-30 minutes every day – this can make a huge difference moving you towards that healthier heart.

Make your workouts smarter not longer. Commit to certain days and times for your workouts ‐ where you can give back to yourself.

The path to changing a lifestyle involves many small steps, knowing what to eat, how to exercise, and perhaps the most important step of all… patience with yourself!

Experience each step as meaningful and important on your path to a healthy lifestyle.

Hi all!

First, no I have not dropped off the face of the Earth. Recent events have just demanded more of my time. I will be getting the articles rolling out again soon.

In the meantime, I am going to be updating the site to a new theme, which means it will have a new look and will hopefully be easier to navigate. This might take a few weeks to get finished, so you might notice some funky things happening to the design while I’m working on it.

I will be opening up the comments section when the new layout is finished so we can get a conversation going and create a better sense of community here, too.

Hopefully it will make your visits to the site more enjoyable.

Please be patient, and stay tuned.

The mind is a funny thing.

I was just sitting at my desk this morning and a question popped into my head.

“What would you die for?”

I’ll be honest and say that it snapped me out of the trance I was in. It’s a pretty heavy question for my subconscious to be asking me before I even unlock the door to my office.

I discovered some things about myself today, the first being that there aren’t too many causes for which I would trade my life. Could I be like the handful of men who signed the Declaration of Independence knowing they would be executed for treason if we had lost the Revolutionary War? That took the kind of courage you don’t see every day.

Could I have withstood a Roman Inquisition without yielding my beliefs, knowing that I would be sentenced to torture and death if I didn’t “go along” with the Church?

Could I throw myself in front of a bullet to protect the President of the United States?

I am not really sure I am as resolute as some of these people in history. But are we truly living if there is nothing in our lives for which we would pay the ultimate price? Are we making any kind of difference in the world if something doesn’t mean that much to us?

I never considered how much of my life didn’t really matter all that much, and how little of it meant everything.

As I sat there thinking, I suddenly was faced with a hard reality. The things for which we would die in this world are far too often the things we give the least amount of attention!

If you asked a hundred people to name THE most important thing in their lives, I would bet that the top two would be God and family, yet how many of us devote MOST of our time to these areas of life? I know dozens of religious people who go to church on Sunday and pray when they are in trouble, but otherwise give God no attention at all. I also know plenty of people who work 60-80 hours a week and are too tired to play with their kids or romance their spouse after such a long day.

The longer we live, the more it seems we shove aside the really important things. Making ends meet takes the place of sitting around the dinner table and sharing a meal with those we love. Spending time in solitude praying or meditating just isn’t possible with all the errands and chores that need to get done.

By the end of the day, we just want to turn our brains off and collapse.

There is a reason why families collapse and people live without hope. Maybe it’s because we allow the mundane aspects of life to sidetrack us. Maybe it’s because we fear the electric bill being late more than the huge chasm that has grown between us and our kids. None of it happens overnight. If it did, we would jump in front of it like a runaway train before it destroys something we love. It happens subtly and quietly, just far enough from view that we don’t notice it.

Isn’t this how such changes always occur?

Perhaps my mind was telling me today that I need to get back on track.payday loans Perhaps something unseen urged you to read this blog for the same reason.

A mentor of mine said it best…

“Stand for something or you’ll fall for anything, and then you’ll be good for nothing.”

Until next time friends,

Weight loss is not a matter of finding the right shake, pill, or diet program.

Even though Americans are heavier and sicker than ever before, and now obesity is running rampant amongst our children, we continue to be baffled at how we can slim down and stay fit. We should know by now that weight loss fads (and there is a new one every month) are not worth the time or money we’ve been spending on them for so long.

Companies are constantly scrambling to convince us that they have the answer, that if we just buy their products we’ll achieve our goals. It’s time for everyone to wake up and realize that these gimmicks DO NOT WORK! They are produced to make profits, not to help us be well. As long as weight loss is a billion dollar industry, they’ll keep coming up with new ways to get into our wallets.

Here are 3 weight loss myths you should know…

Weight Loss Myth #1:

There is an obesity gene. This is an absolute fallacy. Our genes haven’t changed in 40,000 years and obesity has just recently become an epidemic. Obesity results from nothing more than living life in opposition to our genetic programming:

We continue to fill our plates with food that is made in a factory instead of that which is made by nature.

We eat an entire day’s worth of calories in one sitting.

And we get nowhere near the amount of exercise that is required to keep us well.

So our bodies have no choice but to store the excess food as fat.

The only hereditary error from which kids suffer is the one they learn from their parents. We feed our children chicken fingers, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, fast food, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and wonder why they are developing disease earlier and earlier with each generation.

It’s not a mystery.

Every single morsel of food we eat that is not made by nature is seen as a toxin by the body.

This eventually results in sicknesses like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the list goes on and on.

Weight Loss Myth #2:

Cutting carbs is the answer. This myth has become so common it is accepted as truth. It is not.

You don’t have to cut carbs to lose weight. You have to eat the right KINDS of carbs.

Carbs are really just sugar, so when you eat a lot of them, your body will store them as fat (meanwhile making you insulin resistant, which is another topic altogether).

We were meant to get our carbs from fruits and vegetables, not from processed cereal, diet bars, chips, bread, and the like.

If we eat real food (made by nature), the sugars in them are easily and properly broken down and assimilated by our digestive system. If we don’t, it will destroy our ability to balance our insulin levels and lead to Type 2 Diabetes (along with various other health problems).

Any carb that is also a fiber is good for you. All others are not.

Weight Loss Myth #3:

There is a perfect program for me somewhere. All humans have the same genetic code whether you are Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, or whatever. This means that we ALL have the same genetic requirements.

There is nothing special that YOU need that is different from everyone else. Do you know which class of zebra has different requirements for being healthy than all other zebras?

THERE ISN’T ONE!

This means if you want to be healthy, you have to live like healthy people live.

The great thing about following this advice is that the same lifestyle practices that lead to real, permanent weight loss also lead to wellness. It also cuts down on all the confusion regarding nutrition and longevity.

I know losing weight is difficult. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have a society full of overweight people. But the best thing you can do is stop listening to commercials and the media. They are the #1 source of weight loss myths. Not only are they uninformed, they are not looking out for your best interests.

Start slow, take it day by day, and be easy on yourself when you slip up. Eventually, you’ll get to the finish line.

For more weight loss myths, see part 2 of this article.

This past weekend I watched UFC 140.

It was a great series of fights, matching some of the best martial artists the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has ever known. I am continually astonished by the skill these men have developed from years of hard work and training.

I was impressed by one challenger in particular whose opponent had a clear physical advantage over him. He was taller, stronger, and his reach was a full 10 inches longer than the smaller man. In the world of Ultimate Fighting, that is the kind of contrast that can get someone hurt.

Nonetheless, they squared off, but the smaller opponent had a fantastic game plan.

He knew he couldn’t win if he stood in front of his rival and traded punches. The difference in their arm lengths was too great an obstacle at that distance. So he kept moving around the octagon, staying far enough away to avoid being hurt.

Then at varying points, he would see a weakness in the bigger man’s defenses and attack viciously with punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. He was so fast that you might’ve missed the barrage if you blinked.

And it was a very effective strategy.

The commentators said that with all the fighters this bigger man had fought and beaten (some of the best in the sport), that no one had ever done this kind of damage to him. It was a brilliant plan.

The Weaknesses in our Defense

We all have to be like Ultimate Fighters.

We all have weaknesses that need to be overcome in order to live an abundant life. If we don’t, those weaknesses will provide the perfect opportunity for destructive influences to beat us down.

Our destructive influences can be:

Fear

Anger

Sorrow

A nutritionally deficient diet

Negative thinking

Inactivity

Drug dependence

Or a hundred other things

You know what they are. They are referred to as our “demons” and we fight them every day.

We developed these problems and bad habits because of our weaknesses physically, mentally, and emotionally. The longer we allow them to remain, the larger the “holes” in our defenses become.

Next thing you know, we’re getting strategically dismantled in every area of life.

There is one thing you must understand, though, about becoming an ultimate figher: You cannot defeat your demons overnight.

How do these men become some of the best martial artists in the world? They practice, every day, without fail. Some days are very hard. They bleed, sweat, and get hurt. Do they quit when they make a mistake? No, they train harder and in new ways.

They systematically close those gaps until they have eliminated every possible vulnerability. Why?

Because they want to win. They want to be the best they can be. They want to be champions.

How To Be An Ultimate Fighter

Do you want to be a champion in your health, life, and relationships? Then you have to train, every day, regardless of how you feel, what’s going on, or how many mistakes you’ve made. You have to keep your goals in mind and pursue them relentlessly.

Those that don’t take their training seriously will never triumph. You can want it with every ounce of your being, but if you don’t do the work, you won’t get the results.

I have said this many times before: It’s later than you think.

Start now, and never stop.

Become an Ultimate Fighter.

High blood pressure is also known as “hypertension” and can have many causes.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not a hereditary or genetic condition, which means that once you identify the causes of high blood pressure, there is a good chance of reversing it.

You can’t have high blood pressure and be healthy at the same time, so if you have been diagnosed with this condition, it is imperative that you do everything possible to bring your body back to health.

Here are 3 causes of high blood pressure you should know:

Stress Causes High Blood Pressure

Anything that triggers the stress response (fight or flight response) will cause high blood pressure. It does this because when the body is under stress, more oxygen needs to be pumped to muscles and tissues. The walls of the arteries constrict in order to make this happen.

The stress response is the same whether the cause is physical, emotional, mental, or chemical.

What causes the body to trigger the stress response?

Mental stress like worry, anxiety, and fear

Lack of sleep

Emotional stress from loss and strained relationships

Stimulants like sugar and caffeine

Physical danger and injury

Toxins from food, medications, alcohol, and tobacco

Spinal misalignment

Pain

Other health problems

Our bodies were meant to handle stress in the short term. We were not genetically designed to handle chronic stress, however. When the stresses in life never cease, the body will adapt and blood pressure will remain high.

High Insulin Causes High Blood Pressure

An unhealthy diet will cause high blood pressure, especially if you’re eating a lot of processed carbs and sugar because doing so will make your insulin levels spike. As a result, your body will excrete magnesium in your urine.

Since magnesium is responsible (in part) for relaxing constricted muscles, the muscles that tighten blood vessels during stress won’t be able to relax. They will stay constricted making the blood pressure rise and stay that way.

To make matters worse:

High insulin causes you to retain sodium.

Sodium makes you retain water.

Water retention causes high blood pressure.

High blood pressure and fluid retention leads to heart disease.

All this equals an early grave.

Drug Side Effects Cause High Blood Pressure

The very first piece of advice I give when someone asks me about the causes of high blood pressure is to research the medications they are taking. You would be shocked to know how many drugs have high blood pressure as a side effect.

It does your health little good if the drug you’re taking for one condition causes another thatalso has to be regulated.

A simple Google search for “side effects of…” and the name of whatever drug you are researching should results in more info than you need. There are many popular medical websites now that have such data, as well.

If you find you are taking any medication that causes high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about changing your prescription, or better yet make the proper lifestyle changes that will bring you back to health. Most degenerative diseases have a cause that is rooted in improper nutrition and lifestyle habits.

Check out our nutrition section for some great articles on cleaning up your diet.

Find the Right Health Provider

Drugs do not fix the causes of high blood pressure which is why most people have to take them for life.

Please understand, however, that once the cause of high blood pressure is found, this condition can often be reversed. If this is your goal, it is imperative that you find a health provider who is familiar with these concepts and will work with you as a partner.

It’s your health. Take control.

Long term health care isn’t something most people take very seriously.

I’m not talking about health insurance. I mean that we most often satisfy our immediate desires without considering the long term effects to our health.

We want things now, we want them cheap, and we want them hassle-free.

That doesn’t fit into the notion of long term health care at all.

Health Care On The Go

Why else would we love fast food so much? Is it because it’s just so darn good?

I’m quite certain most of us could make a better burger than a teenager with a microwave, so why do millions of people eat fast food several times a week?

And why do we spend billions of dollars on food that every single person on Earth knows is bad for our health over the long term?

The reason is because it feeds into the tempo of our “hurry up” society.

When you stop and think about it, it’s pretty sad that time is often more important to us than our health.

Health Care Doesn’t Hurry

Look at everyone around you. How many different things are they doing at once?

We listen to the TV while looking at the computer and answer text messages while web pages are loading. Our attention spans are about as long as a 2-month-old Pomeranian’s these days.

Here is the problem: There are aspects of our lives that simply cannot be rushed if we want them to be full and complete. When it comes to longevity, we always have to focus on long term health care, not just what our state of health is right now.

When nature is in charge, there are no short-cuts.

No matter how fast your life is, it will still take about 270 days for a baby to develop and be born.

If you break a bone, you can stay attached to your iPhone all day every day, but it’s not going to heal any faster.

And do you actually think you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days and somehow NOT have some negative side effects to your health?

You can’t rush success either, which can be very frustrating. We often look at successful people and admire their accomplishments, even though we don’t often see the years of hard work, frustration, setbacks, and failures.

Health and healing are the same way. No matter what product, pill, potion, or manual a company is trying to sell you, there is no secret path where you get to skip any steps. You will never get to drive through and have a teenager hand you a bag of health through a window.

Another thing we should all get used to is that the change in your center console will never be enough to pay for it. Long term health care is not cheap in our modern society.

We need to realize that paying extra for health care today will save us money over the long term. We balk at the cost of fresh, organic food and whole food supplements, not thinking that putting forth the effort BEFORE we lose our health is smarter, cheaper, easier, and saves us a lot of pain and suffering.

Hassle-Free Health

Just keep in mind that even though there are a million things to do and there will always be “other things” you can spend your money on, there is nothing cheap, convenient, or hassle-free about illness. In fact, it will demand more attention than you are prepared to give.

Every hour wasted in your doctor’s office or a hospital is an hour you will never get back.

When it comes to the really important things, remember to slow down a bit, take some time to make really great decisions for the long term, because your kids and others are watching you. They are going to learn from you how to take care of their health and exactly what is important in life.

Plan out your long term health care now. It’s worth the sacrifice.

Contrary to what we’ve been told, there is a cure for diabetes.

It is not a hereditary condition.

100% of people can cure their diabetes if they follow the right guidelines.

Make no mistake…if you have type 2 diabetes, you will die early from type 2 diabetes or from a complication thereof. If you or anyone you love has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, everything else in life should be put on hold and all resources should be allocated toward getting well.

It is possible, and it can be achieved fairly quickly depending on how strictly you follow certain rules.

The Cause of Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is not a blood sugar problem. It is an insulin problem, and even more specifically it is a nutrition and lifestyle problem. Introducing more insulin to a type 2 diabetic will not cure diabetes because high insulin levels are what start the avalanche that eventually becomes disease.

The American diet is primarily comprised of foods that are processed, high in processed sugar/carbohydrates, and low in fiber. Foods such as:

Pasta

Rice

Bread

Cereal

Potatoes

Diet bars

Soda

Fruit juice

And the like

…cause the blood sugar to spike which results in a rapid increase in insulin.

The purpose of insulin is NOT to lower blood sugar. It is to STORE the EXCESS sugar that you take in.

Your body doesn’t store much sugar though, so the excess will be stockpiled as SATURATED FAT that is harmful to your heart.

So what happens when we ingest too many of these unnatural and processed foods? We will have an excess of insulin in the bloodstream. Insulin in high amounts is TOXIC to cells, so cells have to defend themselves the only way they can.

They become insulin resistant, and that is where the health issues begin.

Insulin Resistance

Your cells have little antennae-like things called “receptors” that stick out and relay information and some nutrients back to the cell. They are like “feelers” that your cells use to gather information.

High insulin levels are toxic to cells, so the cells will turn receptors off to defend themselves. In essence, they make themselves RESISTANT to insulin so they don’t get sick. This causes a problem with the way information and nutrition is brought into the cell.

Also, when cells become resistant, the pancreas has to release MORE insulin to do the same job as before. This causes MORE insulin resistance, and the cycle continues.

There is not one hormone in the body that is not either controlled, or affected in some way, by insulin.

When cells become insulin resistant, the chain reaction is debilitating on a cellular level. The body attempts to adapt to this by making changes with the way other hormones and chemicals work. The altered chemical function is what we call “disease,” and the symptoms of it are what the medical profession attempts to control with drugs.

This can never, AND WILL NEVER, result in a cure for diabetes.

The Cure for Diabetes

Is it possible to cure type 2 diabetes? Absolutely!

But the cure for diabetes will not come in the way that everyone expects. Society is waiting for some miracle breakthrough in the form of a pill that will rid mankind of its ailments. A pill will never cure diabetes because the body is not malfunctioning or missing anything.

It is DEFENDING itself!

The cure for diabetes is in following the body’s genetics.

This applies to nutrition, exercise, movement, thinking, sleep requirements, stress levels, and many other factors. When we live life in opposition to what our genes were programmed to NEED, there will be negative consequences in the way the body works.

I spent the better part of a year studying these concepts and what I discovered was absolutely astounding.

The cure for diabetes is outlined in my eBook. Please get yourself a copy and then teach the concepts to your loved ones.
